Auto Parts / To avoid any impact on driveability, the engine is cranked very
quickly as soon as the driver engages the clutch, potentially
allowing metal-to-metal contact of the bearings before the
protective hydrodynamic oil film is re-established. This was not
an issue when engines were typically started only a few times a
day, but with a start-stop system these conditions may happen
many hundreds of times a day. The problem is compounded
by the use of modern, less viscous oils with a thinner oil
film, necessary to improve engine efficiency and further
cut emissions. To solve this challenge, Federal-Mogul has
developed an innovative, polymer-coated bearing shell that can
withstand momentary operation without lubrication and is also
ideal for the very high loads imposed by highly boosted engines.
As well as increased impact absorption and wear resistance,

this very demanding application. Using sintering techniques, in
which components are manufactured by squeezing and heating
a blend of metal powders, allows the composition and porosity
of the metals to be precisely tailored to match the performance
characteristics required for the component. The result is
substantially improved durability that enables another step in
CO reduction.
